Two key players featured prominently for Akwa United in the game. Uche Collins, a talented striker, and Wisdom Ndon, a dependable defender, took to the field with their respective contributions to the team's journey in the tournament. Collins had already left his mark by scoring a goal earlier in the competition, displaying his goal-scoring prowess and constant threat to opposing defenses. Meanwhile, Ndon showcased his defensive reliability, earning a clean sheet in a previous match through his ability to read the game and make crucial interceptions.

Akwa United, the stronger side in the first half, created numerous scoring chances but couldn't convert them into goals. Collins, Cyril Olisema, Sadiq Rilwan, and Osoba Kabir were all unable to find the target early on. However, in the 42nd minute, the breakthrough came when Sadiq Rilwan was brought down in the box, leading to a penalty. Cyril Olisema coolly converted from the spot, giving the Promise Keepers a halftime lead.

Sporting Lagos, however, came back stronger in the second half. They swiftly equalized through Saturday Okon's 55th-minute strike and took the lead in the 70th minute with Jonathan Alukwu's goal. Despite their efforts, Akwa United couldn't find a way back into the game, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.

The loss marked Akwa United's second defeat in the Naija Super 8 tournament, following a solid run that included victories against Yobe Stars (2-1) and Rivers United (1-0). While their journey in the tournament may have ended, the team can take pride in the performances of standout players like Collins and Ndon. Collins, with his goal-scoring ability, and Ndon, with his defensive reliability and previous clean sheet, made significant contributions to Akwa United's campaign.
