Recall that just two weeks before the commencement of the World Cup the NFF had a heated altercation with Waldrum over corruption allegations made by the coach. The heated exchange of words through the media began when Waldrum questioned the NFF on what the total amount of money given to them by FIFA in preparing towards the competition was used for.

Waldrum exposed the NFF saying most of his players had not been paid for two years neither did he receive his seven month salary which was owed. He further asked for and explanation of what the 774.7 Million Naira given to them by FIFA was used for claiming that the national team itself lacked so many facilities and individuals who are supposed to work with the technical team.

The NFF however responded through their communications officer calling the coach an "incompetent blabbermouth" and accusing him of not going far in tournament while stating that his biggest achievement was taking a team to the World Cup. The NFF claimed that the money, almost 800 Million Naira was used in flight and hotel bookings for the team in the space of a month and that they had nothing to hide.

But in as much as Nigerians around the world calculated that hotel bookings and flight would never accumulate half the total sum over a one month period - The NFF would go ahead to query the coach and reportedly threaten sacking him after the tournament if he did not withdraw his words. Our sources say the NFF felt exposed and embarrassed and had prepared to terminate the contract of Waldrum as soon the team would get knocked out as early as possible.
