The people's elephants kick started their 2023/2024 Nigerian Premier Football League season with a trip to the pantami stadium to face Gombe United in match week two after their opening day fixture against Bendel Insurance was postponed following the participation of Insurance in the CAF Confederations Cup.

The team for Enyimba was relatively weak and understandingly so although they boasted of defender Chigozie Chilekwu. Especially after so much unveilings in the past week.
Gombe United scored first from in the minute. The people's elephants without Stephen Chukwude and Chijioke Mbaoma looked a bit toothless in attack as they bot sat out the fixture. The hosts doubled their lead on the afternoon in the minute wrapping the 2-0 win over the record nine time NPFL winners. A result that Enyimba defender Chigozie Chilekwu was not at all happy with in when speaking to Orangefootballmagazine.
I don't think the scoreline tells the actual story because I could see how hard the team fought. We were determined but it wasn't our day. It'll be a long season but we will get better.
You know we still have to look ahead to that game against Wydad Casablanca in the African Football League and further ahead hopefully. Then there will be the FA Cup games so it'll be a long season. We'll get better with time. He added

90+6' Gombe Utd 2-0 Enyimba #GOMENY #NPFL24
Right at the death. Ahmed Jimoh scores a direct free kick to double the lead for the home team. Surely this is beyond the champions.
Sitting bottom of the table - Up next for Enyimba is a home tie against Bendel Insurance in a rescheduled match week one game then a fixture at the weekend still at home against Akwa united.
