The hosts took the lead twelve minutes into the game thanks to Innocent Gabriel before big striker Chijioke Mbaoma completed a beautiful team move just four minutes later double their lead in Aba.
Akwa would however fight back to get on level terms and did so with goals from Kufre Ebong and David Philip in added time of the first half minutes before half time and seven minutes after the hour mark respectively. All that before former Uyo based player Somari Alalibo scored the winner - a powerful freekick to beat Nurudeen in goal and present the two time African Champions the win.
But one of the talking points in the fixture was David Philp who once again, like in 2021 scored at the Enyimba International stadium. The last time David Philip scored for Akwa United was in 2021. The goal was from a freekick. It was away at Enyimba and they won the League that season. Once again he came off the bench to score the equalizer on that same ground.
Its always about the team not me, yes things happen in football but its not as if i always want to score here more than anywhere else - but it was meant to happen. I hope like in 2021, we can get inspired by that moment again and rewrite history - David Philip said to NPFL TransferMarket
The result takes Akwa United bottom of the table ahead of their next home game at the Eket Township stadium this weekend against Shooting Stars but David Philip will hope his goal against the defending champions will turn around their campaign for good.
