The record champions were confirmed champions of the Nigerian Premier Football League once more on Sunday evening after the draw against defending Champions Rivers United at the Mobolaji Johnson arena. The game started out tough as expected with chances few at the disposal until Ekenne Awazie pounced on some defensive miscommunication from River United  in the 39th minute to put the people's elephants ahead.

However, in the second half it was former Kano Pillars striker Nyima Nwagua who scored for the pride of Rivers in the 69th minute to take the game back to level terms on the night. But that was all that could be done by Stanley Eguma's men in their bid to retain their crown. They however finished third place with eight points and have to settle for a spot in the preliminary rounds of the CAF Confederations Cup next season.
